Frequently Asked Questions
-
What Is PAT Testing?
PAT testing stands for (Portable appliance testing) and is the term used to describe the testing of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. Most electrical faults can be found with a simple visual examination but some faults only show up during testing. However, it is essential to understand that visual examination is a key part of the process because some types of electrical safety defect cannot be detected through testing on its own. -
Am I Required By Law To Carry Our PAT Testing?
Yes, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that you must maintain any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury or damage in the place of work. If you are found to be negligent of this you may be subject to fines and or imprisonment, if there is an injury caused by your negligence and you cannot prove that you have taken all reasonable steps to ensure the safe operation of your equipement, you may be liable for any injuries caused. However, the Regulations do not specify what needs to be done, by whom or how frequently (ie they don’t make inspection or testing of electrical appliances a legal requirement, nor do they make it a legal requirement to undertake this annually). -
Do I Need To Keep Records Of Any Testing?
Whilst it is not a legal requirement, it is advisable to keep records of any testing / inspection completed.
